Cluster 4 school with minimal financial resources

Between the busy traffic and the green banks of the Oude Rijn in Utrecht stands a striking black building with cheerful red and orange windows. This is the Kromme Rijn College (formerly VSO De Pelsschool), a cluster 4 school designed by atelier PRO. Cluster 4 refers to a specific group of children: those with severe behavioral issues and/or psychiatric problems, as well as children associated with pedagogical institutes (PI). The Kromme Rijn College provides specialized education to about 120 children between the ages of 11 and 18. In addition to classrooms, there are two technology labs, an arts and crafts room, a creative space, and a gym.

Not only is the education highly tailored to the students, but the building itself also features several unique characteristics. Notably, each classroom has its own 'time-out' space and private restroom. Furthermore, because the student groups are kept as small as possible, the classroom areas are divided into three clusters of four rooms each. Each of these three clusters also has its own entrance.

The school is surrounded on three sides by the busy, noise-polluted Venuslaan, the access road Kranenburgerweg, and a railway line. On the fourth side, the school opens up toward the Kromme Rijn. For a school like this, it is crucial to shut out the surrounding noise. For this reason, the two-story section of the building acts as a sound buffer against the busy road. The other, single-story volume is slightly rotated, opening it up toward the water. The two building volumes are connected by a central hall. On the quiet side facing the Kromme Rijn, the hall transitions into an elevated outdoor space on the second floor. Through the glass facade, daylight penetrates deep into the interior.

Although the Kromme Rijn College was realized with minimal financial resources, it stands as a robust building along the Oude Rijn that has an inspiring influence on its surroundings.
