The Calandlyceum is transforming its educational vision and positioning in the Amsterdam educational landscape, and the current interior no longer fits what the school needs now; atelier PRO was therefore asked to investigate what was possible within the existing building, with simple interventions, to make the architecture better match. As a result, we have drawn up an image quality plan for the school, with new materials and color schemes, that can serve as a guide for the future.
As a first step, case study and example, using the image quality plan as a starting point, we designed a new interior for the media library, the auditorium, the entrance and the central staircase. The media library in particular was a valuable - and also necessary - intervention: before the renovation, there was no media library at the Calandlyceum, even though this is a must in current education. This space has been given an inviting look, with open, tall cabinets, beautiful light and different types of study spaces.

The original design was based on bright, busy colors, which gave the school a childish look — an appearance that is not appropriate to the age of the students or the new educational vision. In our new design, we actually use a more subdued, mature color scheme to show that students are taken seriously - and at the same time to create peace. In addition, we also opted for natural materials, better lighting and a fresher look.
An important starting point in our design was the school's motto: “Dream bigger, achieve more”, something that is reflected, for example, in the central position that we gave the media library, and in the art in the stairwell. For example, there is now an example for the future, for an interior that is tailored to students, teachers and education
