Transformation from warehouse to archive for the KNAW

During the redevelopment of the Eastern Port Area in Amsterdam, it turned out that the massive concrete warehouse, King Willem I, built in 1961, was ideal for housing the tons of archives of the International Institute of Social History (IISH). But to make the building also attractive for staff, students and visitors, the hermetically sealed block had to be literally broken open. By removing parts of the floors and facades, space and light can now penetrate deep into the warehouse, creating a livable, workable and characteristic research and archive building.

From goods handling to “knowledge transfer”

Only small openings were made in the façade at the front of the building, so that the old private appearance has been preserved. From the entrance, an increasingly spacious loft opens up towards the rear façade. This loft, which leads to a huge window with a view of the Entrepothaven, includes office spaces, the study room, the restaurant and the conference room. On the top two floors, where the warehouse is located, the original warehouse has remained largely untouched.

Optimal reuse of the existing building

Because the ground floor of the warehouse was seven meters high, an intermediate floor could be installed. This is where the solid construction of the building offered a solution; the extra floor could easily be attached to the existing columns. In addition, the former loading dock on the port side supports a cantilever for the library on the first floor; where goods used to be transferred, knowledge is now transferred in the reading room.
