Theater with a hidden depth
The concept is simple. Install a new floor over the old pool to serve as the stage, with a new foyer area on the short side that is openly connected to the slightly lower-level theater café. We deliberately chose not to use the sloping pool floor as an amphitheater because it lacked flexibility and was illogical in relation to the location of the foyer.
One of the starting points was that the old swimming pool should remain visible in the design. Moreover, the space beneath the pool offers fantastic possibilities for performances. The double bottom can be utilized as a theatrical feature. What was once only accessible to experienced divers is now open to everyone.
During development, we consistently sought a simple yet effective finish. The budget was limited, and the temporary nature of the project was meant to be visible. Therefore, we made extensive use of unfinished wooden paneling, which was both functional for the new purpose and fitting for the overall aesthetic without detracting from the atmosphere.
Sightlines are important not only in the auditorium but also in the foyer and bar. For this reason, openings were created at strategic locations. To see and be seen.
A unique facility has been added in an environment that inspires theater makers. Even after its use by the Nationale Toneel, it proved to be a space with endless possibilities. A heart for the neighborhood.
