Metra is a prime example of brutalism and a defining building in The Hague's station area, but it is also in need of renewal. The fifty-year-old office complex no longer meets modern standards for sustainability and functionality. For this reason, Metra is being transformed over the coming years into a future-proof workplace in the heart of the station district.
The concrete facade panels have reached the end of their lifespan and are being replaced by bio-based facade elements with high-performance insulation and triple glazing. The indoor climate will be significantly improved through upgraded installations connected to a thermal energy storage system (WKO) and powered by solar panels. The building will achieve a BREEAM Excellent certification and is also WELL Core Gold inspired. It is therefore 'Paris Proof', fully in line with the high sustainability ambitions of the client, NS.

In addition to a healthy, contemporary work environment with more natural light and better views on the office floors, we are creating a 'heart' on the first floor—a space where people are welcomed, can meet, collaborate, and celebrate.
The renovation carefully aligns with the building's existing qualities: with its characteristic exposed-aggregate concrete facade, Metra is an iconic feature of The Hague's skyline—and that aesthetic will be reflected in a contemporary way in the renewed facade. In this way, this Post-65 icon is preserved for the city while simultaneously being made ready for the future.
