Urban building block
Broad School Meerpolder, Berkel en Rodenrijs
Meerpolder in Berkel & Rodenrijs is part of a new facilities package. In the closed block structure of the urban development planning a very compact project emerged in which homes are realised on top of and right next to the school. It is a composition that puts the block structure in perspective; the closed structure is broken with views allowing the space in the block to gain additional dynamics. Inside this compact structure the Brede School forms the wall aimed at the urban square on the north side.
The Broad school
Having their own heart is the starting point for the schools. In the central halls the specific identity of every school is expressed. Each school has its own hall: a high space with a broad central stairway and the auditorium. By linking the auditorium to the hall not only a fascinating spacious composition is realised, but also a multifunctional location for handy work, lunchtime, theme parties, school theatre & drama, Saint Nicolas etc. Around this central hall the different teaching clusters are located. Every cluster has its own central space as the extension of the classrooms. Here pupils can play and work independently. This space allows for a flexible response to present and future requirements in teaching. Every cluster has a separate entrance allowing the flow of children to be split up into smaller groups allowing even the smallest children to feel at ease. On the northeast side of the school a square is located where the older pupils can play.
