Dorte Kristensen - architect director
Dorte Kristensen (1963) is of Danish origin and is architect-director at PRO since 2005. She started working at atelier PRO in 1989 as a designer and architect and from 2000 until 2003 she was additionally responsible for one of the design duos. Since 2002 Dorte has been a member of the executive board of the Architects’ Research Education Association (STARO), a subsidiary body of the Dutch Architect Association (BNA). Dorte studied architecture at the ‘Arkitektskolen Aarhus’, learning there the principles of master Scandinavian architects and ‘Neues Bauen’, graduating as a Cand. Arch. She continued her study with two years at the University of Technology in Delft and working at Atelier PRO she once more encountered the concepts of the master Scandinavian architects and ‘Neues Bauen’. According to Dorte ‘Buildings are not statues; they are formed around the inhabitants of a town’. She has designed a wide array of buildings, preferring to work with natural materials ‘that adapt completely to that one unique spot’. The attention is focussed on people. Materials, colour and light are the bearers of space.

Recent buildings such as the New Community Center with homes in the Zeeheldenbuurt in Tilburg, The Dance and Music school Factorium also in Tilburg, the Town Hall Bronckhorst in Hengelo and the ROC Graafschap College Doetinchem demonstrate the qualities and richness of the gaps.

Dorte has participated as a juror for the BNA (Dutch architects association) Building of the Year 2011 and the Rietveld Prize 2010.

Dorte is a member of the General management of atelier PRO.
